How to easily setup a WebDAV Server on Windows and sync to it (2023)

My 5 minute method for WebDAV Server setup

Here at odrive we get a lot of questions about WebDAV server setup and sync. It is a powerful and secure way to provide remote access to your data, so naturally folks are looking for an easy way to get started.

Below I’ll show you how you can get WebDAV up and running on Windows in about 5 minutes. I’ll also detail how you can then easily sync your new server with any system.

Tested on Windows 10, Windows Server 2012R2, and Windows Server 2016.

Installation via Powershell

We’ll open a powershell session with administrative permissions to install the necessary Windows components.

  • Click the Windows Start/Logo button in the Windows taskbar.
  • Type “powershell”.
  • Right-click on “Windows Powershell” and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Click “Yes” if a UAC window pops-up, asking for confirmation.
How to easily setup a WebDAV Server on Windows and sync to it (2)
  • Copy and paste the following command into Powershell and hit enter:
$feats = @("IIS-WebServerRole","IIS-WebServer","IIS-CommonHttpFeatures","IIS-HttpErrors","IIS-Security","IIS-RequestFiltering","IIS-WebServerManagementTools","IIS-DigestAuthentication","IIS-StaticContent","IIS-DefaultDocument","IIS-DirectoryBrowsing","IIS-WebDAV","IIS-BasicAuthentication","IIS-ManagementConsole");foreach ($feat in $feats) {Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName $feat};New-SelfSignedCertificate -DnsName odrive-self-signed -CertStoreLocation cert:\LocalMachine\My;& "$env:windir\system32\inetsrv\InetMgr.exe";

This one-line command will install the Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) modules needed for WebDAV, create a self-signed certificate to allow HTTPS connections, and launch the IIS Manager. This process can take a couple of minutes (longer on slower systems), so just sit back and relax for a bit while it does its thing.

Virtual Directory

  • Make sure the IIS Manager screen is up (it should’ve opened as part of the installation step).
  • Expand the computer name listing in the “Connections” column.
  • Expand “Sites”.
  • Right-click on “Default Web Site” and select “Add Virtual Directory”.
How to easily setup a WebDAV Server on Windows and sync to it (3)
  • Under “Alias” type “WebDAV”.
  • Under “Physical Path” select the folder location on your computer that you wish to make available via WebDAV.
  • Click “OK”.

It’s a good idea to add a small file at the chosen “Physical path” that can be used to test, once we’re running. I use a basic .txt file with a few lines in it.

Bindings

  • Click the “Add” button to pop-up the “Add Site Binding” window.
  • Select “https” for the type.
  • Leave “IP address” as “All Unassigned”.
  • Type in “4433” for the port.
  • Select “odrive-self-signed” as the SSL certificate. This is the self-signed certificate we created during the “Installation” step above.
  • Click “OK”.

Note: There is a bug in some versions of IIS that will reject MOVEs when the standard port is used (443), which is why I recommend a non-standard port like 4433. A workaround was done in the odrive client move method to account for the bug. It won’t be a problem if you use odrive as a client, but could be for other applications.

This concludes the basic setup, but I highly suggest reading on to get the most out of your new server. The “Additional Tips” section also highlights some common “gotchas”.

Note: I have noticed, on some installs, that IIS seems to do some final configuration on the initial WebDAV requests made to the server. This can result in an error when you first try to establish client access to the server. A quick retry or two should get you through this.

Syncing With Your New WebDAV Server

If you would like to have Dropbox-like access to your WebDAV server (who wouldn’t? 😉), you can use odrive to sync and share your WebDAV content, for free.

  • Signup for odrive.
  • Link your WebDAV server.

The example below is linking to the server over the local network because I have not setup external network access to this machine. Setting up external access is outside the scope of this write-up.

How to easily setup a WebDAV Server on Windows and sync to it (15)
  • Under “Name” enter a meaningful name for your WebDAV link.
  • Under “Server” provide the IP address, port number, and alias for the machine that is running your new WebDAV server.

Pay close attention to the port number and alias here. Remember that the port number is the one we specified in the “Bindings” step above (4433 in my case). The alias is the alias we specified in the “Virtual Directory” step above (“WebDAV” in my case).

Note: When linking to a local IP, the odrive web client will not be able to test the connection. In this case you will see this message: “Could not connect to WebDAV server to validate your credentials. You may still be able to connect. Do you want to continue?” Click on “Continue Anyway” to still allow local odrive client connections.

  • Make sure “Require Valid SSL Certificate” is unchecked.

Because we are using a self-signed certificate, it won’t be considered “valid”, even though it will still fully encrypt all of your WebDAV traffic. You can always opt for trusted certificate at a later time.

  • The username and password will be the standard Windows user credentials used to login to your Windows machine where your new WebDAV server is running.
  • Install the odrive desktop client or odrive agent (Linux/CLI).

This is a basic setup to get you up and syncing quickly and effectively. There are many areas you can dive into to add more users, control granular user access, add storage locations, use your own SSL certificate, utilize different authentication methods, etc..

If you hit any unexpected issues, take a look at the “Additional Tips” section below, first. There are some common items listed there that may explain and resolve the behavior you are encountering. You can always ping me on the odrive forum if you hit a wall, as well.

I am hoping these instructions will allows folks to easily install and use WebDAV.

The following information is not mandatory for using your new WebDAV setup, but you will likely find it helpful.

Directory Browsing

If you want the ability to navigate your WebDAV server using a web browser, you will need to enable “Directory Browsing”

(Video) WebDAV Server. How to configure remote access for Windows & MacOS on a QNAP NAS

  • In the IIS Manager, click on “Default Website” in the “Connections” column.

  • Click on “Enable” under “Actions” in the right column.

If you are using the self-signed certificate created in the “Installation” step above, the browser will likely complain of a potential security risk when you try to access it. You will need to choose to continue, despite the warning, to browse over HTTPS.

File Size Upload Limit (Unable to upload large files? Look here.)

IIS defaults to a 30MB file size limit for uploads. This can be changed to a maximum of 4GB.

  • In the IIS Manager, click on “Default Website” in the “Connections” column.
  • Double-click on “Request Filtering”
How to easily setup a WebDAV Server on Windows and sync to it (18)

  • Change the default value in “Maximum allowed content length (Bytes)” to 4294967295
  • Click “OK”

MIME Types (Unable to download some files? Look here.)

By default IIS will block serving content (return a “404 Not Found” error) for file types that are unknown (.log, .flac, and .mkv, for example). You can add additional MIME types (and remove others), if you wish to adjust what is supported.

It is best practice to create an entry for each additional type you want to add. If you find yourself in a pinch, however, you can add a wildcard mapping until you can sort out the proper individual entries.

  • In the IIS Manager, click on “Default Website” in the “Connections” column.
  • Double-click on “MIME Types”

  • Click on “Add” under “Actions” in the right column.

  • Add the new MIME Type extension
  • Add the associated MIME type
  • Click “OK”.

If you plan to use IFS, odrive’s file splitting feature, you will want to add these two MIME Types:

Extension: “.meta”
MIME Type: “application/octet-stream”

Extension: “.”
MIME Type: “application/octet-stream”

Special Characters

The default settings should allow all characters that Windows allows, except the “+” character. There is a setting to try to deal with that.

  • In the IIS Manager, click on “Default Website” in the “Connections” column.
  • Double-click on “Request Filtering”
